Mission

K.R.U. (Knowledge, Rhythm, and Understanding) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama and dedicated to empowering youth through the transformative power of hip hop.

Our mission is to provide comprehensive Hip Hop music education to children of all ages, fostering their personal and creative development while instilling positive values such as peace, love, and having fun.

By teaching the four core elements of hip hop – writing rhymes, breakdancing, drumming, and graffiti arts – we aim to help youth express themselves in a positive manner, leading to holistic growth in their mental, physical, emotional, and financial well-being.

Since its inception, K.R.U. has been committed to bringing awareness to the historical aspects of hip hop culture. We believe that understanding the roots and evolution of hip hop is crucial in appreciating its impact on society and empowering young individuals to connect with their cultural heritage.

By combining educational programs with artistic expression, we provide a unique learning experience that engages and educates students while fostering a sense of pride and identity.

The lack of access to music education, especially in underprivileged communities, has long been a concern. Through our various initiatives, K.R.U. aims to bridge this gap and bring positive hip hop music instruction to children who may otherwise not have the opportunity to explore their creative potential.

By imparting hip hop fundamentals and offering after-school programs, summer programs, and specialized programs for children with special needs in hospitals, K.R.U. has successfully touched the lives of numerous young individuals, inspiring them to discover their talents and pursue their passions.
